A word about cord ties ☺️
A word about cord ties.
There is a lot of worry about their use, but remember, until relatively recently, we all used cord ties all the time, and we still do if the cord has been clamped inappropriately initially and is now too short to clamp.
Some people worry about infection.....I certainly, anecdotally don’t see this (cord infections are very rare with basic hygiene and in healthy babies, and I have seen one in 20 years, NOT with a cord tie), and I suspect the serrated edge of the cord clamp is pretty good at growing bacteria too.
Hopefully the good kind which actually help the baby colonise it’s skin and build it’s microbiome Parents report less worry about the tie, it’s less bulky, less likely to be knocked, and allows for easier nappy management and more comfortable skin to skin. It also looks darn cute.
To tie, wrap it once round the cord about 4cm from the baby’s abdomen, tie with a tight double knot (tightly), then bring both ends of the tie round to the other side of the cord and tie again, in the same way. Hey presto The cord in the picture is a day three ‘nicely dried up and hanging on by a thread’ cord
Edited to add: both cord burning and not putting a clamp on at all after *waiting for white* are also options some women prefer.
